Speakeasies, secret societies, and mutual aid societies (usually conducted by the Black church) each operated under one shared commonality: sworn secrecy. 'The Society' originates from the necessity for Americans -- mainly Black -- under heavy surveillance, to remain private about important affairs -- as a prophylactic against mob and/or law enforcement violence.
